Paella is built on a foundation of rice, with locally sourced proteins typically added to the dish. Following this tradition, the paella will include seafood of various shellfish and white fish. Additionally, sausage and chicken will be used to augment the dish. Paella is seasoned with saffron and smoked paprika in a sofrito of tomatoes, onions, peppers and garlic. Prepared over a wood fire, the cooking process offers time for celebration and raillery, all part of paella’s rustic appeal. There will be brief instructions and recipes on preparing the dish followed by dinner, including crusty bread and dessert. BYOB. Limited to 38 participants. $35/member, $40/nonmember. LECTURE - They Called Us Girls with Author Kathleen Stone: Tuesday, July 15 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM

Back in the day, they were called girls. And today? How and why did some women of the mid-20th century establish themselves in successful professional careers when society expected them to stay home? This question is what Kathleen Stone set out to discover as she began interviewing seven highly accomplished women now in their 80s and 90s. She found that a multi-faceted set of influences shaped these women and fueled their ambition, influences that are as important today as they were nearly a century ago.

PEAKS ISLAND PLAYERS AT TEIA PRESENT “Mr. Flannery’s Ocean”: Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 at 7 PM

Peaks Island Players at TEIA present “Mr. Flannery’s Ocean” a short play by Lewis John Carlino, directed by Liz Rollins A retired seaman, belligerent, cantankerous and very human, has laid claim to the ocean, an ownership which grew simply out of a need to belong to and protect something. On the terrace of an old weather-beaten hotel on the coast he sits in his deck chair, ever watchful, ever ready to defend his ocean. He spends his days in perpetual combat with Maug, the maid who can never seem to bring his tea hot enough. Joining Mr. Flannery on the terrace comes Mrs. Pringle, widowed and a woman with a wistful sadness in her eyes. It is the magical tale of humanity, compassion, and the giving and the receiving of a gift which no one believed could be possessed. $15 at the door.

Rehearsals: (most) Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sun 5:30-7:30 (in July only) on the stage

LECTURE - Peaks Island News with Ross Sneyd: Tuesday, July 29 at 7:00pm

Peaks Island has little shortage of news and Peaks Island News is here to keep track of it. The Peaks Island News is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed by a group of island citizens who felt it was important for the island to have its own newspaper again. For years, island news was primarily available through individual voices through social media sites, often resulting in less than civil discourse on community matters. This print-only monthly newspaper is dedicated exclusively to covering news about the island schools, businesses, local government and organizations, featuring current events, arts, history, people and island culture. Hear from the newspaper’s board and its editor about how the monthly paper accomplishes its mission.

LECTURE - John Wooding on Richard Gregg and the Power of Non-Violence: Tuesday, August 12 at 7:00pm

Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than twenty years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford. Gregg was educated at Harvard and worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi.  Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices towards people and the planet, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. He wrote The Power of Non-Violence, published in 1936, perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. He was a friend and colleague of leading pacifists and activists, such as Scott and Helen Nearing, Martin Luther King, Bayard Rustin, and Aldous Huxley. His work profoundly influenced social justice, peace, and civil rights movements.

LECTURE - A Book by its Cover: The Case of The Scoundrel’s Son with Fred Fahey, Scott Nash and Doug Smith: Wednesday, August 27 at 7 PM

Whether on the shelf of their favorite bookstore or a popular website, readers are drawn to books by their covers despite the adage on how such should be judged. In this presentation, the author, art director/designer and illustrator will discuss how their collaboration led to the cover of The Scoundrel’s Son, a work of historical Tudor fiction as well as a pastiche to Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper. Fred will discuss the concept for his novel and what aspects of the tale he wanted the cover to convey. Scott will share his vision of this 21st century work and how it could reflect artistic elements from both the 16th and the 19th century. Doug will tell of how he embraced all these elements and created a wonderful reality. Artwork from the earliest sketches to the final product will also be on display.

RC BOAT DEMO: Friday, July 18 at 6 PM Porch Gathering

Chris Broadhurst will be giving a demo of his remote-controlled sailboat. Please watch for announcements as this event requires wind so we will reschedule if Mother Nature is not cooperating!

The sailboat is a replica of a Laser but is 1/4 size at 39 inches/1 meter in length. It has only one sail and a rudder. The remote control manages these 2 functions in order to propel the boat through the water. There is no other form of propulsion so winning a race depends on the sailing skills of the person operating the remote. Chris has belonged to two other clubs and has raced competitively for many years.

Join us and check out this unusual and family-friendly sport!
